Lance

Personality

Lance tries his best to appear friendly and polite, but tends to be very gloomy despite his best efforts due to his difficult situation. Due to the emotional and physical abuse he’s suffered in many realities, he is quite distrustful of people in general. The only exception to this being Aylann, who’s always been by his side and in whom he often confides.

His trust in Aylann is relentless. He never questions why Aylann only appear after all the trauma has already happened, or why he cannot remember their meeting at all, in any universe.

Background

Lance is a human with powerful, reality-bending magic. If he can imagine it, he can make it happen. Create objects out of thin air? Turning invisible? Flying into space without suffocating or freezing? All of this and more, he can do. The only thing he can’t do is affect other people and their actions, to his dismay. Even so, each time one of his alternate selves dies, they fuse with his current self, bringing with them more power, knowledge, and memories…and their respective trauma.

Universe 0

The “first” universe had no trace of magic, and thus Lance had no talent that people could recognize him for. He was average at best, and lacked self-confidence. Thankfully, he had two friends he knew from childhood, Takaya and Cristel, who he was very close to and who were very accepting of his identity. He even developed deep feelings for Takaya, though he was too shy to confess at first.

Teenagehood was difficult, he had trouble fitting in, and his classmates were oddly focused on bullying him specifically. It’s only later, after a series of particularly targeted harassment based on his gender identity, that he realized his friends had outed him to the others, and pretty much shepherded the harassment campaign. Unable to bear with the betrayal and continuous abuse, he locked himself at home and refused to leave, dropping out of school, and society in general, but the damage was already done.

On one particularly lonely night, Lance takes his own life.

And in the space between life and death, he dreams of a butterfly.

Universe α

In the next universe, magic is a rare thing. When Lance is born with strong water magic, his parents first try to hide him and his powers from the world, knowing full well what happens to those cursed with magic. He grows up isolated, never meeting any children his age with the exception of Takaya, the son of a trusted family friend, whom he trusts with both his secrets.

Despite his isolated lifestyle, he grows up fairly happy, until one day government officials show up at his door, having been informed by an anonymous source that Lance has magic. Takaya had babbled to a friend, who told their parents, who then informed the authorities. It had been an accident, but the damage was done.

At fourteen, Lance is taken from his home and family, never to see them again, forever a tool and lab rat until the day he dies.

Trivia

• Due to all his alternate selves’ memories pushing against his, Lance’s memories of the current universe, pre-fusion, are vague at best. He assumes this is why he cannot remember actually meeting Aylann.
• Each alternative reality is happening in tandem, but with a few years of difference (meaning one Lance could be 19, while another is still 10, though the exact timing varies due to reality’s unpredictable nature).
• …I had a fucked up fever dream once and decided to make it into a pair of fucked up OCs, is the gist of it lmao.

• Due to the mess of memories and trauma Lance has accumulated, his sexual tastes are all over the place; he can be into super fucked up stuff one day, then end up being triggered by the gentlest of touches.
